The United States of America is the host of the 44th International Chemistry Olympiad, to be held July 21-30, 2012, at the University of Maryland, College Park. The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the official organizer of the event where more than 70 nations are expected to compete. The event is comprised of exams and laboratory work at the University of Maryland and scientific and cultural excursions in and around the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

The competition will cover several areas of chemistry, including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and spectroscopy. Qualifying student teams are typically chosen through a series of regional and national Olympiads.

The IChO is returning to the U.S. for the first time since 1992, and only the second time in its 44-year history. IChO provides chemistry students the opportunity to compete at the highest levels and establish networks that go beyond cultures and borders.
