Reports: SE 49686-SE: American Chemical Society Scholars Program

Robert J. Hughes, American Chemical Society

Since its inception in 1995, the American Chemical Society Scholars Program has awarded over 2260 college scholarships to minority students pursuing degrees and careers in the chemical sciences. The PRF made the first grant of $50,000 to the ACS Scholars Program in 2007, the second $50,000 grant in 2008, and the third $50,000 grant in 2009.  Most of the college freshmen in the program do not have the benefit of outside support. Accordingly, the PRF funds are assigned to first year students. To date, 60 freshmen have received scholarship money provided by these three PRF grants. During calendar year 2009 the PRF funded 20 deserving undergraduates in the ACS Scholars Program. The record shows that being selected by the American Chemical Society for this scholarship award not only reduces the students' financial burden, but it also boosts their confidence resulting in higher academic achievement. The PRF grant helps these freshmen progress to their second year as undergraduates and beyond.

The following twenty Scholars who benefitted from the PRF grant during calendar year 2009 are currently in good standing and renewed in the program:
