Relaxation Behavior of Polymeric Materials, at the ACS National Meeting, August 2007, Boston, MA

James Runt, Pennsylvania State University

This ACSPRF SE grant was used to support travel by invited international speakers to the “Relaxation Behavior of Polymeric Materials” symposium, held at the Fall 2007 ACS meeting held in Boston. The symposium was co-sponsored by the ACS Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering Division.
The two-day (four session) symposium was quite successful, and the audience was generally on the order of 50-75 attendees. The symposium covered a variety of topics in the general area of polymer dynamics, including dynamics in a variety of polymer nanocomposites, ion-containing polymer electrolytes, confined polymer systems, crystalline polymers, and polymer blends and solutions.
The following is the list of international speakers whose travel expenses to Boston where partially support by this ACSPRF SE grant, along with the title of their presentation:
1) Prof. Friedrich Kremer, University of Leipzig (Germany), “Broadband dielectric spectroscopy on the molecular dynamics in thin polymer layers”
2) Prof. George Floudas, University of Ioannina (Greece), “Effect of pressure on the dynamic heterogeneity of compatible polymer blends”
3) Dr. Andreas Schonhals, Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing (Germany), “Molecular mobility of poly(phenyl methyl siloxane) investigated by thermal, dielectric and neutron spectroscopy”
4) Dr. Tiberio Ezquerra, Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología de Polímeros (Spain), “Using the beta-relaxation as a probe to follow real-time polymer crystallization in model aliphatic polyesters”
5) Prof. Koji Fukao, Kyoto Institute of Technology (Japan), “Glass transition and dielectric relaxation of thin films of labeled polymers”
