Reports: SE 49691-SE: Supramolecular Chemistry, at the Midwest Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Oct. 21-24, 2009, Iowa City, IA

Leonard R. MacGillivray, University of Iowa

Narrative, PRF #49601-SE Leonard R. MacGillivray, University of Iowa Professors Leonard R. MacGillivray and F. Christopher Pigge, University of Iowa, hosted a symposium on ‘Supramolecular Chemistry’ from Oct. 21 to Oct. 22, 2009 at the 2009 Midwest Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Iowa City, IA. The two one-half days symposium hosted a total of 13 speakers from regional, national, and international research institutions. Attendance at the symposium was excellent, with approximately 50-60 attendees attending each session. The Type SE grant supported a lecture of Professor William Jones, University of Cambridge, UK on “Mechanochemistry and Design Strategies in Multicomponent Crystal Formation”. The field is related to the use of mechanochemistry to form organic solids. The 30-minute lecture of Professor Jones covered the history of the field and ongoing work in his lab in the area of pharmaceutical co-crystals. Questions were entertained for a period of approximately 5-10 minutes following the lecture. Professor Jones was then able to interact with additional conference attendees and participants.
