Symposium Honoring 2008 Arthur W. Adamson Award Winner, Francisco Zaera, at the ACS National Meeting, April 6-10, 2008, New Orleans, LA

Wilfred T. Tysoe, University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

The symposium in honor of Francisco Zaera's receipt of the Arthur W. Adamson Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Surface Chemistry was held at the 235th ACS National Meeting in New Orleans, LA from April 6-10, 2008.

The first session was held on Sunday, April 7, 2008 and broadly separated into two sessions that was designed to reflect the focus of Francisco's work.  The first session was on Hydrocarbon Chemistry and the second on Chiral Chemistry.  Following consultation on who the invited speakers should be, the following people were invited:

Steve Bernasek

Hajo Freund

Bruce Koel

Charlie Campbell

Mike Trenary

Gabor Somorjai

Cindy Friend

Andy Gellman

Peter McBreen

Richard Lambert

Dave Sholl

Ras Raval

Ferri Davide

Kalle Ernst

Chris Williams

Neville Richardson

Wayne Goodman

All of the invitees accepted the invitation and financial support was provided to all of the invited speakers to assist with their travel and registration expenses and the symposium proceeded according to the following schedule.

Sunday, April 6, 2008

2:00 p.m., Selectivity in catalytic conversion of hydrocarbons by control of metal nanoparticle size (1-10 nm) shape and composition, Gabor A. Somorjai

2:25 p.m.  Structure and enantioselectivity of chiral surfaces, Andrew J. Gellman, Layton Baker, Ye Huang

2:50 p.m. Interaction and reaction of hydrocarbons with supported nanoparticles,  Hans-Joachim Freund

3:15 p.m.  Selectivity switch in N-functionalization of olefins on Au, C. M. Friend, Xingyi Deng, Xiaoying Liu, Thomas A. Baker

3:40 p.m. Energetics of hydrocarbon adsorption on Pt(111), Charles T. Campbell

4:05 p.m.  Spectroscopic characterization of surface intermediates derived from acetylene and ethylene on Pt(111), Michael Trenary, Rongping Deng

4:30 p.m. Chemistry and catalysis of Pt-Ge surface alloys, Bruce E. Koel

4:55 p.m.  Reactivity trends in CO oxidation: From UHV, D. Wayne Goodman

Monday, April 7, 2008

8:00 a.m.  Chiral self-assembled monolayers on graphite, Steven L. Bernasek

8:25 a.m.  Diastereoisomer interactions in adsorbed species: Role of the substrate, Neville V. Richardson

8:50 a.m.  Enantioselectivity by cinchona alkaloids: A dialogue between spectroscopy and catalysis, Davide Ferri, Angelo Vargas, Alfons Baiker

9:15 a.m.  Enantioselectivity in chiral monolayers, K-H. Ernst

9:40 a.m.  First principles studies of chiral modifiers on Pd(111) and adsorption on quartz (0001), David S. Sholl, Joanna N James, Jeong-Woo Han

10:05 a.m.  Heterogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation of C=C bonds, D J Watson, R. B. R. John-Jesudason, Jonathan W. Burton, Richard M. Lambert

10:30 a.m.  Mirror-symmetry breaking at chiral surfaces: From nanoscale events to macroscale amplification, Rasmita Raval

10:55 a.m.  Surface science studies of the origins of rate-acceleration and enantioselection in the hydrogenation of ketones on chirally modified platinum, Peter H. McBreen

11:20 a.m.  Understanding enantioselectivity on single crystal surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum, Luke A. Burkholder, Feng Gao, Wilfred T. Tysoe

It was generally agreed that the symposium was extremely successful and the attendance at each of the sessions was approximately 30 to 40 people.  In particular, since there are few symposia that specifically treat the fundamentals of chiral catalysis, it was agreed that the possibility of organizing a conference on this issue was discussed by the attendees.
