Banff Symposium on Organic Chemistry, November 2007, Banff, Alberta, Canada
Kai Ylijoki, Banff Symposium on Organic Chemistry
The 3rd Banff Symposium on Organic Chemistry was held over the Remembrance Day weekend of 2007 at the Banff Park Lodge in scenic Banff, Alberta. The conference was very well attended by students, post-doctoral fellows and professors from all of the major universities in western Canada as well as representatives from industry including Merck and Boehringer-Ingelheim. In total, 108 people were in attendance. This number includes the invited speakers: Dr. David MacMillan (Princeton), Dr. Barbara Imperiali (MIT), Dr. Amir Hoveyda (Boston College) and Dr. Makoto Fujita (University of Tokyo). In addition, an industrial talk was given by a representative of Merck-Frosst.
All areas of organic chemistry were explored: synthesis, materials, organometallic and bio-organic. The funding provided from the ACS Petroleum Research fund allowed us to bring Prof. Fujita from Japan, with his self-assembling materials talk being a genuine highlight of the conference. Without this assistance, we would have been incapable of bringing this distinguished speaker from overseas, and our attendees would have missed out on seeing a speaker who is undoubtedly a true originator and innovator in the field.
