2007 International Symposium On Photochromism, October 2007, Vancouver, BC
Vance Everett Williams, Simon Fraser University
This grant was used in aid of the 5th International Symposium on Photochromism (ISOP-07), which was held in Vancouver, B.C., 7-10 October 2007. ISOP-07 was a highly interdisciplinary conference that brought together approximately 140 researchers from around the world to report on the latest advances in light-switchable molecules, with topics that ranged from fundamental studies of photochemical processes, to the synthesis of new chromophores, and the exploitation of these systems in materials and biological applications. The symposium included 49 oral and 63 poster presentations over the three-day conference. In addition to funding from the ACS PRF-SE, sponsorship was also obtained from the following companies and organizations: Transitions, Essilor, PPG, Switch Materials, Simon Fraser University, Bruker Optics, Varian, Bruker Biospin, Royal Society of Chemistry, 4D Labs, Polyrise, Xerox, Tokuyama, General Electric and Mitsubishi Chemical. The international contributions to this conference were a vital component to its success, as the majority of researchers in the area of photochromism work outside of North America. As such, the PRF grant provided an invaluable contribution by allowing us to offset a portion of the travel expenses of several of our invited speakers, who traveled from Japan, Russia, France and China. Their presence at this conference undoubtedly was a decisive factor in the attendance of a large number of other researchers. ACS PRF-SE funds were divided equally among six international invited speakers ($600/person) in order to partially cover travel and food expenses. Administration of this process was carried out by Cantrav Services, a Vancouver company that was contracted to assist in the operation of this conference. The success of this conference also led to the publication of a special issue of the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry (Volume 200, Issue 1, 2008). This special issue, entitled “Perspectives on Photochromism from ISOP'07, Vancouver, Canada, 7-10 October, 2007” published manuscripts from several of these speakers, including S. Nakamura, S. Aldoshin and S. Delbaere, as well a limited number of other invited papers from participants at the conference. Once again, the aid provided by the ACS PRF-SE grant in allowing these speakers to attend the conference was also crucial in securing their participation in this special issue. The six invited speakers are listed below, along with the titles of their talks.
1) Sergey Aldoshin - Institute of Problems of Chemical Physics (Russia): “Heading toward creation of photocontrolled molecular magnetics”
2) Yi Chen - Chinese Academy of Sciences (China) “The applications of photochromic material to optical storage”
3) Mikhail Krayushkin- Russian Academy of Sciences (Russia) “Synthesis and structure of thienyl-containing photochromes”
4) Stéphanie Delbaere - Université de Lille 2 (France) “What can bring NMR spectroscopy to photochromism?”
5) Tomiki Ikeda- Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan) “Photomobile Polymer Materials - toward Light-Driven Plastic Motors”
6) Shinichirou Nakamura - Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Japan) “Quantum Yield and Field Effect in Photochromism”
