Main Group Chemistry: a Symposium in Honour of Neil Burford, Tris Chivers, and Rich Oakley, at the Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition, May 24-28, 2008, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Robin G. Hicks, University of Victoria

This PRF-SE grant provided support for three international speakers to attend the symposium titled “Main Group Chemistry In Honour of Neil Burford, Tris Chivers, and Rich Oakley” which took place at the 91st Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition in Edmonton, Alberta. The symposium spanned two and a half days and consisted of a mix of invited and contributed talks as well as poster contributions in the Inorganic Division’s poster session. The three invited speakers supported by the PRF-SE were (1) Ian Manners, University of Bristol, (2) Frank Edelmann, University of Magdeburg, Germany, and (3) Hansjorg Grutzmacher, ETH, Switzerland. Four other North American speakers (Warren Piers, Calgary; Robert Haddon, UC Riverside; Alan Cowley, Texas-Austin; Jack Passmore, New Brunswick) rounded out the invited speakers list and there were approximately 40 other contributed talks to fill out the symposium. Based on informal feedback during and after the conference, the consensus opinion amongst the participants and attendees was that the symposium was a huge success, based in part on the caliber of the invited speakers.
