Two students funded by the grant and myself – a third student withdrew close to the summer start date due to another opportunity - worked on the E-G project in the summer of 2008. Five sections that likely contain the stage boundary interval were measured, described, and collected, as well as four drill cores were logged, and sampled at a higher sample concentration. These include: Lazarus Run, Delaware, OhioErie Materials Quarry, Sandusky, OhioOatka Creek, LeRoy, New YorkSeneca Stone Quarry, Fayette, New YorkFlint Creek, Phelps, New YorkAKZO 9454 – Genesee River Valley, New YorkAKZO 9455 – Genesee River Valley, New YorkAKZO 9456 – Genesee River Valley, New YorkAKZO 9457 – Genesee River Valley, New YorkIn addition, tentaculitid specimens at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History were studied, which gave clues to some localities in northern Ohio for study. Several other quarries and stream locations in Ohio and New York were surveyed and the boundary interval was determined to be covered, or not collected/recollected. Tentaculitids, conodonts, and magnetic susceptibility data were collected from the Seneca Member of the Onondaga Limestone, Union Springs Formation, Cherry Valley, East Berne, and Chittenango members of the Oatka Creek Formation, and the equivalents in Ohio that are assigned to the Delaware Formation. Most notable was the recognition of the “Dave Elliot Bed,” a shell-rich horizon within the East Berne Member in west-central New York that corresponds to a much thicker interval in the eastern part of New York; and finding “Delaware” conodonts in the Oatka Creek Formation. The E-G boundary remains equivocal in Ohio, but magnetic susceptibility trends and the identification of Givetian ammonoids in the East Berne indicate that the Eifelian-Givetain boundary in locally from the top of the Cherry Valley Limestone to the base of the Dave Elliot Bed within the East Berne Member.
