4th International Symposium on Bioorganometallic Chemistry, July 6-10, 2008, Missoula, MT
Edward Rosenberg, University of Montana
By all acounts from the participant feedback the conference was a great success. There were 76 participants and 8 accomapnying persons. There were thirteen invited lectures, 23 oral presentations and 25 posters. The distribution of the presentations allowed each session of the meeting to have a specific theme and this was well received by the participants. The session themes were: 1)hydrogenase enzymes and models, 2)organometallic enzymes, 3) organometallics in toxicology, 4) organometallics in structural biology, 4) organmetallics in medicine. Sixteen countries were represented at the conference. The PRF grant was used to sponsor the hotel accommodations of three European guest lecturers, Professors Thauer, Jaouen and Metzler-Nolte. The conference was also sponsored by the NSF-EPSCoR grants at the University of Montana and Montana State University, Strem Chemicals and Covidien Inc. The 4th Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biorganometallic Chemistry sponsored by Elsevier was goven to Professor Toshikazu Hirao of Osake University. Professor Hirao presented a special lecture entitled "The Beauty of Organometallic Bioconjugates." Two cash prizes, also sponsored by Elsevier were presented to the two best student posters. A special issue of the Journal of Organometallic Chemsitry will be devoted to papers based on the presentations given at the meeting.
