Vibrational Spectroscopy as a Probe of Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics: Theory and Experiment, at the ACS National Meeting, March 2007, Chicago, IL
John E. Straub, Boston University
The grant funds were used to support the travel of foreign invited speakers participating in the symposium "Vibrational spectroscopy as a probe of biomolecular structure and dynamics: theory and experiment" held at the ACS National Meeting the week of March 25-29, 2007 in Chicago, IL.
The symposium consisted of a morning (M) and afternoon (A) session held on each of four days of the meeting. The attendance at the sessions was:
Sunday M 75/A 85
Monday M 150/A 130
Wednesday M 90/A 90
Thursday M 70/A 60
The numbers listed above indicate the maximum attendance during a particular session. Considering the competition at the meeting, where there were other strong offerings in physical chemistry, our attendance was exceptionally good.
Overall, there were 36 speakers in the symposium. There were 29 domestic speakers and 7 foreign speakers. The foreign invited speakers that received support using the Type SE grant funds were:
Jean-Louis Martin (Ecole Polytechnique)
Peter Hamm (University of Zurich)
Yoshitaka Tanimura (Kyoto University)
Min Cho (Korea University)
Thomas Elsaesser (Max Born Institute)
Gerhard Stock (University of Frankfurt)
Martina Havenith (Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum)
The spirit at the meeting was excellent. There was stimulating discussion throughout the meeting, and a great mix of cutting edge experimental and theoretical work presented. In all, it was a highly successful event that formed an important contribution to an emerging field of great significance to physical chemistry.
