Bridgehead Carbenes and Bridgehead Alkenes

Our attempts to make 2-methyladamantene through precursor 4, as well as polycyclic carbenes derived from 2-methyladamantene, have failed. Compound 1 was synthesized in several steps and lithiated with tert-butyllithium at –78 °C to give 2, but the hoped-for cyclization to 3 apparently did not occur, as no monomeric or dimeric products derived from 4 could be found.
