Catalysis Relevant to Energy and Sustainability, at the 233rd American Chemical Society National Meeting, March 2007, Chicago IL

T. Don Tilley, University of California (Berkeley)

There was strong participation in this symposium, as it involved four sessions of invited talks, followed by two more sessions of contributed presentations. There were six presentations from foreign speakers, and the other speakers were associated with US universities or national laboratories. The foreign speakers (supported by PRF funding) were Sascha Ott (University of Uppsala, Sweden), Fraser Armstrong (Oxford, UK), Lief Hammarström (University of Uppsala, Sweden), Masayuki Yagi (Niigata University, Japan), Kazunari Domen (University of Tokyo, Japan), and Koji Tanaka (Institute for Molecular Science, Japan). The invited speakers focused on three main topics related to renewable energy and solar conversion: 1) water oxidation by electrocatalytic or photochemical means, 2) electrocatalytic proton reduction and hydrogenase mimics, and 3) carbon dioxide reduction. The attendance was very high, exceeding 200 for some of the early presentations from high profile speakers. On average, attendance varied between 100 and 150.
