Foundations of Surface Chemistry, at the ACS National Meeting, March 2007, Chicago, IL

David Wayne Goodman, Texas A&M University

The symposium supported by this PRF grant was organized in honor of four 2007 ACS Award winners: Profs. John T. Yates, Jr., Hans-Joachim Freund, Charles T. Campbell, and Bruce E. Koel. Prof. Yates was the winner of the Peter Debye Award. Prof. Freund was the recipient of the Gabor Somorjai Award. Prof. Campbell received the Adamson Award and Prof. Koel, the Olah Award. These four award winners are world leaders in the surface science of catalysis. The symposium was composed of nineteen of the top world leaders who presented state-of-the-art research that represented the cutting edge in the basic science of hydrocarbon catalysis. No such symposium has been held previously since on no previous occasion has there been such a multiplicity of ACS award winners in a single research area. The attendance was exceptionally high for each session and averaged approximately 100 persons. Overall this was a tremendously successful symposium that accomplished all of its goals.
