48842-SE Electroactive Polymers for Energy Conversion and Storage, at the ACS National Meeting, August 17-21, 2008, Philadelphia, PA
The ACS Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) sponsored the symposium “Electroactive Polymers for Energy Conversion and Storage” held at the 236th ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia, PA August 17-21, 2008. The symposium was organized by Professor John R. Reynolds ( University of Florida) and Dr. Jennifer A. Irvin (Texas State University-San Marcos.) The symposium consisted of five half-day oral sessions with thirty-four talks on photovoltaics, capacitors, batteries, electrolytes, fuel cells, and actuators. Average attendance at each session was approximately 100 people.
The organizers solicited a total of $20,600 in funding from: the Office of Naval Research ($5000), the Army Research Office ($5000), the Air Force Office of Scientific Research ($5000), the PMSE Division ($2000), and ACS-PRF ($3600). All funds were used to defray travel and registration costs of invited speakers. ACS-PRF funds ($1200 each) were used to defray travel costs of three foreign invited speakers. Dr. Rene Janssen travelled from Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and spoke on “Small band gap and multijunction polymer solar cells”. Dr. Hiroyuki Nishide travelled from Washeda University, Tokyo, Japan and spoke on “Radical polymers for organic-based rechargeable device”. Dr. Jun Chen travelled from the University of Wollongong, Wollongong, Australia and spoke on “Conducting polymer and carbon nanotube architectures for electrocatalysis”.
Without support from ACS-PRF, the organizers would not have been able to invite so many foreign speakers. This symposium provided an excellent opportunity for interactions between speakers, audience, and organizers.
