47872-SE Controlled/Living Radical Polymerization, at the ACS National Meeting , August 17-21, 2008, Philadelphia, PA

Krzysztof Matyjaszewski, Carnegie Mellon University

The ACS Meeting in Philadelphia, PA , took place August 17-21, 2008. It was the fifth ACS Symposium on Controlled/Living Radical Polymerization. 90 lectures and 122 posters were presented during 10 sessions within 5 days of the symposium. The first session was a tutorial with lectures covering kinetics of radical reactions, related synthetic organic chemistry, bioconjugates and hybrids. Subsequently atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was presented in 2 sessions, nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) and degenerative transfer processes, including reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) also in 2 sessions. The remaining five sessions were focused on materials prepared by controlled/living radical polymerization and on commercial processes. All lectures covered recent advances in the rapidly developing field of controlled/living radical polymerization and showed many connections to materials science and demonstrated the importance of the field which resulted in first commercial products prepared by these techniques. The proceedings from the Symposium were published within ACS Symposium Series in 2009, volumes 1023 and 1024. The active participants came from US, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and United Kingdom. The PRF funds were used to partially support travel expenses of six foreign speakers.
