Molecular Structures and Large Amplitude Motions of Substituted Nitromethanes

Preliminary results for 2-methyl-2-nitropropane showed that the C-N bond is longer than the corresponding ones in nitromethane and chlorornitromethane. We are in the process of incorporating microwave rotational constants into the structural analysis.

Electron diffraction structural investigation on nitroethane has been initiated. We are particularly interested in 1) the torsional potential about the C-N bond and 2) the length of the C-N bond relative to nitromthane, and 2-methyl-2 nitropropane. Microwave data and theoretical calculations will be incorporated into the data analysis wherever it is appropriate and necessary.
