Bending the Rules: New Geometries for Layered Systems
Randall D. Kamien, University of Pennsylvania
We have developed the theory of columnar order on curved surfaces. This theoretical work has been used to explain the patterns found by Ed Kramer's group (UCSB) for SEBS triblocks on curved substrates. We have proposed a new method for patterning based on analogy with gravitational lensing. Our results suggest new ways of patterning at the sub-micron scale through patterning of the underlying substrate on much larger scales.
