49685-SE Solid-State Materials: Structure, Bonding and Properties, at the Canadian Society for Chemistry Conference and Exhibition, May 30-June 3, 2009, Hamilton, ON, Canada

Yurij Mozharivskyj, McMaster University

The Scientific Education grant from The ACS Petroleum Research Fund was used to reimburse for travel and accommodation expenses of three invited foreign speakers (in accordance with the grant proposal):

  • Professor Miguel A. Alario Franco (Universidad Complutense Madrid, Spain)

His presentation "The Increasing Interest of Pressure in Solid State Chemistry" highlighted the novel techniques for the synthesis of functional solid-state materials with desired properties.

  • Prof. Richard Dronskowski (Chair of Solid-State and Quantum Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University, Germany)

His talk "Combing Experiment and Theory" will discuss the relationship between the electronic and crystal structures and physical properties of materials.

  • Prof. Yuri Grin (Director of the Max Plank Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden, Germany)

His talk "Cage compounds: Chemical Bonding and Synthesis" featured the synthesis, physical properties and bonding analysis of novel cage compounds, industrially important materials for catalysis, separation, gas storage and purification, etc.

A check for CAD 1,638.75 (US $ 1,500.00) was mailed to each invited speaker on June 24, 2009. The entire amount of the grant (US $4,500) was used for the reimbursement. The Canadian Institute for Chemistry contributed free registration waivers for the speakers.

The invited speakers gave talks at the symposium with the theme "Solid-State Materials: Structure, Bonding and Properties" at the 92nd Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) Conference and Exhibition, held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada from May 30 to June 3, 2009. Their participation significantly enriched the symposium and exposed the Canadian solid-state chemists to the cutting-edge research performed in the leading research institutions.

In addition, a number of distinguished researchers from both the U.S. and Canada (and also outside) gave talks at the symposium G. Miller (Iowa State Un., USA), P. Woodward (Ohio State Un.), A. Sefat (Oak Ridge National Lab, USA), K. Wiebe (Florida State Un., USA) T. Kolodiazhnyi (NIMS, Tsukuba, Japan), B. Harbrecht (University of Marburg, Germany), H. Kleinke (University of Waterloo, Canada), M. Bieringer (Univeristy of Manitoba, Canada), A. Mar (University of Alberta, Canada).

Success of the symposium is reflected by the all-time high attendance in this symposium: the average attendance was 48 and the maximum officially recorded attendance was 61 (the attendance was taken twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon). Besides, the overall conference registration was 2076, which is an all-time record for a CSC Conference and a eclipsed the attendance at a meeting in Montreal several years ago.

We thank the ACS Petroleum Research Fund for its generous support, which allowed to make the Solid-State Symposium and the CSC 2009 in general an exceptional event and, without doubt, a great success.
