As the name implies, the National Historic Chemical Landmarks Program commemorates the achievements of American chemistry. But the NHCLP also encourages commemoration of historic chemical landmarks in other countries. In addition to meeting the criteria listed in About the Program, an International Landmark must have made a major impact on the history of American chemistry and/or have a distinct, well-documented, and easily understood link to the people or events in the history of American chemistry. If these criteria are met, the NHCLP Advisory Committee will accept nominations signed by ACS members who reside abroad. However, such nominations must be officially co-sponsored by an appropriate chemical society - a counterpart to the ACS - in that country. If the NHCLP Advisory Committee believes a nomination merits approval, it sends the nominating documents to the ACS International Activities Committee (IAC), which handles contacts with foreign societies. Only ACS members may submit nominations to the NHCLP Committee. Should the chemical society of another country wish to originate an NHCLP nomination, the IAC will put them in touch with ACS members who can move the nomination forward. Other foreign societies may have programs similar to the NHCLP. The ACS is eager to cooperate with such programs and will consider co-sponsorship of landmark designations in those countries.
