train the trainers workshop

Green Chemistry Education Train the Trainer Workshop:

Sharing Progress on the Grand Challenges of the Chemical Enterprise
Marriott Inn and Conference Center
Friday, June 26, 2009

The workshop is open to qualified individuals interested in teaching green chemistry workshops, and who are pre-registered for the workshop. You must be registered for the GC&E conference to attend this free workshop. To register for the workshop, check the train-the-trainers workshop box on the conference registration form.

Goals

  • Create wider awareness of sustainable scientific practices by training presenters, who may train others to support a wider understanding of green chemistry.
  • Introduce the principles of green chemistry and provide examples of applications and innovative green chemistry in practice.
  • Provide opportunities to practice application of workshop resources and network with other participants.
  • Present resources and examples for communicating green chemistry to a variety of audiences
  • Renew/establish contacts with ACS/Green Chemistry Institute and the green chemistry community.

Tentative Agenda

8:30 - 9:00 Check-in & Breakfast
9:00 - 9:15 Getting Started
Participants and presenters introduce themselves. Goals and outcome details of the workshop are discussed. One of the key goals of the workshop is to increase the number of people who can speak effectively about green chemistry to a broader audience.
9:15 - 10:15 An Introduction to Green Chemistry
(Presenter: R.K. Sharma, University of Delhi)
As the U.S. becomes ‘greener’ by the day, it remains essential to clarify sustainable practices from broader environmental issues. An introduction to green chemistry concepts provides background and current examples of green chemistry at work in academic, industrial, and societal settings.
10:15 - 11:00 Activity for Presentations to K-12/General Public
For this activity, participants divide themselves into groups of 3-4 based on affiliation, or interests. The task is to list issues to consider before talking to the general public, a K-12 classroom or working with pre-college students. After 10-15 minutes of brainstorming, participants record their ideas on flip chart paper and each group gives a brief report on their issues.
11:00 - 11:15 Break/Networking time
11:15 - 12:00 Working with K-12 Education: Goals and Resources (Presenter: Michael Tinnesand)
This presentation reviews some of the issues raised in the opening activity and covers some of the lessons learned at ACS and GCI in working with pre-college students. Following this is a review of resources helpful in working with K-12 students.
12:00 - 1:00 Lunch/Networking
1:00 - 1:45 Reaching Out to Industry (Presenter: Anne Wallin, Dow)
An efficient, sustainable community must include work between academia and industry to establish opportunities for collaboration and application of greener approaches in industrial processes. Examples of green chemistry in action demonstrate how greener approaches can also be more profitable.
1:45 - 2:30 Greener Approaches to Undergraduate Education: Goals and Resources
(Presenter: Jim Hutchison, University of Oregon)
Participants will focus on infusing green chemistry concepts into the college curriculum, and how to talk to colleagues who may be resistant to change. Many programs have revised their traditional organic chemistry courses to reflect greener approaches. Opportunities exist in revising university-wide sustainability practices. This presentation focuses on examples of how this has been done, and offers resources for greening college chemistry.
2:30 - 2:45 Break/Networking time
2:45 - 3:30 Activity for Incorporating Greener Approaches in Undergraduate Programs
Participants are divided into small groups. Each group lists steps for incorporating green chemistry at the college level. After 10-15 minutes of brainstorming, participants record their ideas on flip chart paper and each group gives a brief report on their issues.
3:30 - 4:30 Storyboard Project
Participants will create ‘storyboards’ for draft presentations they anticipate giving as a result of the workshop. Each individual (or group) will sketch 10-12 ‘slides’ on flip chart paper as outlines for a future presentation or activity. Storyboards will be presented, as time permits.
4:30 Evaluation and Reflections
