A special issue of the Graduate Education Newsletter focuses on mentoring and advising in chemistry graduate programs. Included in this issue are student perspectives on advising in graduate school. What do wizened grad students feel are the most important factors to consider when choosing a research advisor and what areas do they feel especially need improving? Also included are essays from chemistry faculty advisors, sharing the wisdom and best practices for mentors. |

The fifth Academic Employment Initiative (AEI) was held at the Fall national meeting in Philadelphia. Approximately 88 candidates interested in academic positions presented their posters to faculty recruiters during Monday night’s AEI held at the front of the SciMix poster session. While the presenters and recruiters appeared to be highly engaged, traffic between the posters built up to an impressive level. “[We need] more room between the posters” a faculty recruiter exclaimed “It was a little too crowded”. To a poster session organizer, this rings music to the ears. Those interested in participating in the next AEI, which will be held in Washington, DC, are encouraged to submit an abstract through OASYS starting January (2009). |
