Grants and Fellowships
"What grant and support opportunities are there for women in chemistry?"

The above question came from a graduate student who was straining to balance TA-ing, research, and family — a very recognizable situation to any of us who have been there. The ACS Women Chemist Committee is an advocacy group devoted to addressing issues facing women chemists. Other groups also provide networking opportunities, lobby for the interest of women graduate students and postdocs in the sciences, and provide directed grants. These include the Association for Women in Science (AWIS), the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the L'Oreal/UNESCO For Women in Science program, and Sigma Delta Epsilon/Graduate Women in Science (GWIS).

Networking on the Web
Web 2.0 is well established and most of us are very aware of sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Wikipedia that allow people from around the globe to connect with eachother, share content and collaborate on projects. In recent years many services have grown up that are directed to those of us in chemistry and other sciences. These include social networking sites, science-specific blogs, blog aggregators, microblogs and services to share audio and video. Read more

The Academic Employment Initiative

Will you be looking for a faculty position in 2009? If so, plan to participate in the Academic Employment Initiative (AEI) where you can meet university faculty recruiters at the 2009 Fall ACS National Meeting in Washington DC. Candidates seeking faculty positions present posters on their current research at the AEI Poster Session. Abstracts submissions begin in January.
